Serie A Preview: All roads lead to Rome

It is the Derby della Capitale in Italy this weekend, as Francesco Totti leads his Roma side against arch city rivals Lazio. Perhaps one of the most heated derbies in European football, this one is unlikely to disappoint as both sides will be desperate for Roman bragging rights.

Lazio are currently two points above their rivals, but have experienced an alarming dip in form in recent weeks.

The Biancocelesti are without a win in their last three, losing both away games and snatching a point against Torino at home. They will hope to re-capture their early season form when they take on Roma on Sunday afternoon, and will look to Miroslav Klose to deliver the goals.

Roma’s inconsistent season continues under Zdenek Zeman, never short of entertainment, the Giallorossi followed up consecutive wins with back-to-back crushing 3-2 defeats. However, they returned to form last weekend, thrashing Palermo 4-1 at the Stadio Olimpico. Where Roma are involved, goals traditionally follow, and it should be no different on Sunday as these two sides have put on great games in the past.

Lazio ended a run of five straight derby victories for Roma by doing the double over their rivals last season. Klose was responsible for breaking Roman hearts in the first meeting with an injury time winner, while Lazio won by the same 2-1 result in the next clash. Edy Reja is no longer in charge of the sky blue half of Rome, with Vladimir Petkovic set for his derby debut on the bench.

The unbeaten run came to a crushing end last weekend for Juventus, when they were defeated by bitter rivals Inter in the Derby d’Italia. The Bianconeri went an incredible 49 games unbeaten, but saw the run finally come to an end in a 3-1 defeat. However, the boys from Turin did bounce back in style in mid-week, with a 4-0 win over Nordsjaelland in the Champions League.

They will hope for a similar reaction domestically when they travel to struggling Pescara, who momentarily escaped the relegation zone with a win over Parma last weekend. That was just their third win of the season, and having lost several key players in the summer with loan deals ending, they will treat any points taken from Juventus as a bonus.

These two have only previously met during Juve’s year in Serie B, with the Old Lady winning both games. Goals continue to be contributed throughout the team for Angelo Alessio, while Pescara are led by Vladimir Weiss who has three goals so far this season.

Having achieved the impossible by defeating Juventus in Turin, Inter closed the gap at the top to just a point as they head to Atalanta. The Nerazzurri go in search of their eighth consecutive league win, having won all their away games so far this season and having conceded just two goals on the road.

Atalanta are also enjoying a purple patch of their own, winning three and drawing one of their last four games. That run of results has seen them rise to eighth place in the league, but they don’t have the greatest of records against Inter.

Andrea Stramaccioni’s side are unbeaten in the last five meetings, winning two and drawing three. The last time Atalanta beat Inter at home was back in January 2009.

Milan have started to string results together, and are unbeaten in their last three league games. The Rossoneri secured their most prolific win of the season last weekend, hammering Chievo 5-1 at San Siro. With Bojan leading the charge with some impressive displays, they will hope to make it two wins in two when they entertain Fiorentina.

However, the Viola are also in fine form, winning their last three games and goals were also the order of the day in Florence last weekend, with a 4-1 win over Cagliari. Talismanic striker Stevan Jovetic will be missing through injury though, and his absence will be a huge blow to Vincenzo Montella.

Fiorentina derailed Milan’s title bid last season with a 2-1 win at San Siro late in the season, their first win against the Rossoneri in seven years. It will be difficult to repeat that without Jovetic and a win here for Milan would see them move within four points of their opponents.

| Milan – 2.00 | Draw – 3.25 | Fiorentina 3.75 |
