FA Community Shield Preview

After their last day heroics to secure the Premier League title, Manchester City face FA Cup winners Chelsea for the Community Shield. Roberto Mancini’s men pipped their city rivals Manchester United to the title in one of the most memorable last days of the English top flight, with Sergio Aguero sealing it in injury time.

Chelsea, under the stewardship of Roberto Di Matteo defeated Liverpool at Wembley in the FA Cup final, while also going on to lift the Champions League trophy in Munich. Having ended their penalty hoodoo with victory against Bayern, Chelsea are 5.00 to win on penalties.

The Blues have spent well this summer and will be hoping to ensure a successful start to the new campaign. Di Matteo has been appointed permanent manager after finally ending owner Roman Abramovich’s quest for European glory, and has seen the likes of Edin Hazard and Oscar added to the squad. Following the departure of Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres will now harbour hopes of leading the line for the European champions.

In contrast Manchester City have been subdued this summer, bringing in no real notable additions. Speculation continues to link them with a move for Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie, despite Mancini denying interest in the Dutch international.

City have won three of the last five meetings between the two sides, the latest a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League in March. Clashes between the two have been relatively close, with results favouring the home side. However, they meet at Villa Park on Sunday, hoping to add the Community Shield to their respective trophy cabinets.

Odds On: Chelsea to win – 3.20 | Draw – 3.25 | Manchester City 2.20
